Roosts

Is there a rule of thumb for amount of roosting bar (by feet) needed per chicken? I know my 11 girls used to all huddle on about 5 ft of an 8ft bar but they used the whole 8ft getting up and on it. I am going to have around 20-30 chickens and am wondering how to roost them all?
Thinking maybe a three tiered roost will work but I had a two tiered before and they all only went on the highest bar.

I remember reading somewhere that it was suggested 9" per bird. Mine only used the top roost too....so I took out the rest. But, if they needed the room I am sure they would have used the lower roosts.
