I have a rhode island red/ red star? that is lethargic, when I picked her up yest. fluid came out of her mouth and eyes!! I gently squeezed her and I probably got over a cup! very gross. Now she is just standing alone in the coop with her eyes closed shaking her head every once in a while. Anyone ever heard of such a condition?

I have never heard of such a condition, but i would definitely quarantine her immediately and see if you can assess the situation further.

I just went to check her-she had made her way outside and was standing by the water. I bleached out the bowls etc. and now I've got her isolated. It's the strangest thing I've ever seen, when I tip her like a teapot-water comes from her mouth! ascites sounds somewhat like a possibility, but she is around 5yrs old. I just don't know.

Ascites is often a liver problem in layers. Meat birds get ascites much earlier because their organs are all mush anyways. It has probably been brought on by 5 years of accumulated toxins taking their toll on her organs.

Are you sure she doesn't have a crop problem? If you pick up a bird and put pressure on a full crop you get a big mess. How does her breath smell?

breath smells bad-kind of like sour, dried blood. Her crop might be a little swollen, when I put pressure on it all I get is fluid. Plus it seems like she has two crops-one with the fluid, one with food. she does walk some, but is very lethargic and tipsy

There should only be one crop. She has a crop problem it sounds like- maybe an impaction or sour crop. Have you tried a crop massage with olive oil? I'd also use the search tool on this site to look up all you can on "sour crop". I've never dealt with it, myself so I can't offer much help. You also may want to edit your post title to indicate that you may have a crop issue. More knowledgeable folks may respond to that title if they have some experience with this issue.

Sorry I can't be more help.

Well, thanks for the help. I spent time reading up on crop issues and it appears the problem may have been sour crop. I've massaged her (friendly) crop, working out more fluid and stuff. She seems better, just weak now.

I went through a chicken having sour crop. What I ended up doing was feeding it layer pellets mixed with yogurt with live cultures in it and mixing some apple cider vinegar in with the water. Sometimes I mixed a bit of olive oil in with the food too and the chicken loved it. It was easier than trying to get it in the chicken with a syringe [IMG] You don't want to use too much olive oil though because it can be bad for their livers. It took a few days but I think by the fourth day this chicken had nothing in it's crop one morning and I knew it was all cleaned out! The crop originally felt like a huge water balloon!
