I thought I may as well post up my progress so far having seen the thread on ideas for economical coops. I have spent nothing so far - well I am using some nails I must have bought at some time though I am re-using nails too. The coop is 7ft high at the front, 6ft at the back and the base is dictated by the door sizes - 6 1/2ft wide and 5 ft deep.

I haven't bought any timber and think I won't have to; it has all come from skips and freecycle. The flooring is made of two internal doors and the roof from three. I am using old kitchen flooring on top of the roof which looks waterproof - plastic I think - but will have to add to it if not.

The end result will cost about £100 though as am going to use new mesh for an additional pen which will be more secure than the one I have at the moment with mesh on top. This additional pen will surround the coop and back on to the existing pen which will be linked by a chicken sized hole.

    The pen:

The coop started (ground is very uneven but decided to cut the timbers the same length and build up with bricks where needed):

The roof made of discarded flooring - I expect to add something for the winter.

Thank you so much for showing the detailed picture of the nesting boxes! That's exactly how I want mine to be, but I didn't know how to make it work but your picture helped alot!
