Sacramento Area, California
We are going to be putting together the Coop this weekend and I need to figure out where to put it.

I live in the Sacramento area so the summers can get crazy hot in July and August (100+ for DAYS), so I’m thinking shade is the most important thing to ensure they have. But I am also worried about predators from the sky, as we live very close to the river and hawks and owls are common.

So I’m just needing some thoughts about the location I’m thinking of and any pitfalls or considerations I am not thinking of cuz I’m new to chickens! Is it better to have easy access for predators of the 4 legged variety with the trees, or less shade and no trees inside the run? Either way I will likely get bird netting for parts of the area. They will be fully predator proof at night in the coop.

The first picture is the area with lots of shade, and the other area has some shade but gets more late afternoon sun and is much more open to the flying predators. I would let them have the entire area if we didn’t have a pool and plants that aren’t safe for chickens in the garden...so I planned on fencing off the area with limited exposure to sun and birds. TIA!

Posted this for someone yesterday but it applies here too.

Highest priorities to consider for coop/run placement are: 1) legal setbacks, if any 2) drainage at the location 3) sun vs shade (you will need deep shade in the summer due to your high temperatures) 4) proximity to utilities such as water, power, as well as to storage for food and such, and walking distance for you to be able to get to it to do maintenance and such.

Aerial predators can be stopped with netting, so I don't consider that a big priority when it comes to placement.
