Well ... I KNEW Rosie (black rosecomb bantam) was setting somewhere. She disappeared a while back, and every so often I'd see her out at dawn, scratching for the ducks' leftover crumbles. She disappeared when I went out. I've been looking for her nest everywhere, but couldn't find her.

Today ... there was peeping. In the VERY thick underbrush in FRONT of the fence (I'd been looking in the backyard) was Rosie, surrounded by fluffballs. We were worried about snakes, cats, and other predators, so finally Rosie is rounded up and, for the moment, in a cardboard box in the utility room, quietly setting on her babies.

I have FIFTEEN new chicks ... and the daddy is either a buff-tailed black Japanese bantam or one of my partridge rock bantams. Or a mix of ... but they all look the same to me. And Shogun used to escort Rosie around a lot, so maybe they are Jap Bantam x rosecomb.

Either way ... I didn't WANT a yard full of banty mixes .... 6 banties is enough for me. But ... they are TOO cute, and I feel a responsibility to protect and raise them anyway. So now I have 15 unexpected new fluffballs, along with my 7 new purchased chicks this year (who are looking more like the adult chickens by now ... beautiful babies), and still have 7 eggs due to hatch soon. (Any Golden Seabrights that hatch from them are going back to their original owner ... but the Silkies are supposed to stay with me.) Not to mention (and I HAVE to mention them!) the three baby geese added this year, now 2 months old.

I think I've lost count of how much poultry I have now ...

And I've got to seriously get building ...

But I am SOOOOOOOOOOOOOO glad my daughter will get to see the babies with the mama. I LOVE how mama hens are with chicks. And I'm glad I get to see it too! I'm so excited ... for chicks I didn't even want, and don't know WHAT I'm going to do with!
