Hi! Advice on what to look for in week old salmon favs? I'm going pick 2 out this evening. They will be pets and egg layers.

Check the toes. I have found the ones from hatcheries to have improper toe placement. Of my three, one has the 5th toe straight up in the air almost against the leg, one has two toenails on one toe, and the other has a curly toe. If I was to do it again, I would get them from a show breeder. Very sweet birds however.

I have one that I thought was a brahma until someone here told me. Very sweet bird. She is getting picked on the most during integration and I can't help but to step in, the poor thing comes running and hides behind me. She is absolutely adorable.

They are very nice birds, but so sweet that they may get picked on in a mixed breed flock, especially by those production reds.
Also, you just might be able to se sex differences this early, so look at pictures before you go if you only hope for pullets.
Mary
