Does anyone know if using sand in the coop will help with mite control? I've always used shavings; I'm in New England so I don't think sand would be a good choice over winter, but with spring coming I've been thinking about trying it for the warm weather. It seems like it would be less hospitable to the mites... does anybody have any idea?

Anyone?....Bueller??

The mites that live off the bird (only come out at night to feed) will live in any little crack or crevice in the coop.
Sand wouldn't help IMO...and it not great bedding for many reasons, especially in cold winter climes.
