We are trying to figure out how to keep the coop as clean and dry as possible. There are so many flies right now and I'm wondering if the pine shavings have anything to do with that. What are the pros and cons of sand in the coop?
Thanks!

Pine shavings really don't have anything to do with the flies...you have chickens...you have flies. With that said, keeping the coop as clean as possible helps to keep them down. I've started using those 'throw-away' fly traps and man do they WORK! I've noticed a big difference already...

As for the pros and cons of sand in the coop, you'll probably get a myriad of responses to your query from BYC members...some like it, some don't. As for me? I'm using construction-grade sand (not play sand, too fine) about 3" deep and I'M IN LOVE with how much easier it is to keep the coop floor clean! Rake it up to clean out the poops and you're done. Here's a great page with more on it:

Hope this helps...all the best!
