I'm the soon-to-be caretaker of a small suburban flock! The top reasons for getting chickens are:

1) tick control - had Lyme disease last year, Damminix tubes didn't work this spring, and I refuse to cover my gardens with pesticide that will run into the lake across the street! 2) Easy kitchen scraps to compost conversion
3) backyard eggs!

It might be an odd order but composting help and eggs wouldn't have sold me on their own. Am looking forward to seeing the wyandotte ladies of the tick patrol out on their rounds!

i'm also a newbie! my four chicks arrived one week ago today and have made a home out of our downstairs bathtub :)

and our coonhound has taken a keen interest in them... he greets them every morning with a roo and an inquisitive peek into their brooder. hopefully he stops drooling and licking his chops...
