Scaly Leg Mites on Cochin

Hi, we appear to have a beginning case of scaly leg mites, only apparent at the moment on our bantam cochin. I'm going to be soaking her legs in oil, exfoliating, and covering in petroleum jelly. Is this the best method? Do I have to do it for every chicken? Also, what is the best way to eradicate them from the coop? (we use sand for bedding)

Oh, and what caused them? What can I do to make sure it doesn't happen again?

yep that is a great method and if the others are around her(assuming everyone is together not in breeding pens or anything) then the others should be treated as well.
