Hello there. I'm here today seeking advice regarding a young peafowl of mine; of our four peachicks this year she's our only imprinted one, so we're quite attached to her. It's come to our attention that she has a lump of food lodged in her throat. This happened maybe 2 hours ago, just after she was given some macaroni as a treat. The lump is about an inch below the chin and two inches above the crop. It's oblong and maybe 1/2 an inch long and 1/4 inch wide. It's very compact. I've administered a very small amount of olive oil via syringe. The lump moves pretty freely up and down for around a 1/2 inch space, and I've attempted to gently massage it into the crop, but at a certain point it will not go any further downwards. If she doesn't improve by morning we will most likely be making an emergency call with our local vet. Any input from those with experience with this type of thing is welcome.

Can you gently massage it up? Have a pair of tweezers and a helper nearby in case the lodged food comes up. Is she drinking? I wouldn't give anymore food for now.

Be very careful with oil... Aspiration of oil can cause lipoid pneumonia.

Update: Last night at around 2 AM the lump had moved down into her crop, and as of this morning seems to be completely gone. I withheld feed until this afternoon just in case, and she seems to have recovered fully. Thanks for ya'lls help.

That's great! I'm glad it worked it's way through. Two a.m. huh? Guess you didn't get much sleep last night. [IMG]
