In the Brooder
2 of my chicks seems like they are overheating, they are doing the gasp action with their mouth and have their wings held slightly away from the body. Here is my confusion. I can't understand why it won't just move away from the heat! I have four chicks in a brooder about 3 and 1/2 feet long by 2 and 1/2 wide. There is a temperature gradient from 100 under the heat lamp to around 75 on the opposite side. The chicks are weeks old. Could it be something other than overheating with those symptoms? I tried raising the heat lamp so the temperature under it is around 95 with a similar gradient but the action is still present.
Do I just keep raising the heat lamp to decrease the temperature? That doesn't seem right with 5 degree per week rule. What should I do?
