Sadly, we had to euthanize a beloved hen today due to a prolapse, secondary to what we now know was a severe case of egg yolk peritonitis. We rescued her 2 months ago while chicken sitting for a friend during an arctic blast, assuming she would die that night if left with the flock. She was standing like a penguin & getting pecked so we brought her home, got her cleaned up & warm, gave her calcium in case she was egg bound and hoped for the best. That night, she ate and drank like a champ and pooped…oh, so much poop! Long story short, she turned into an amazing house chicken and other than the massive growth in her abdomen, she seemed very happy. Today however, she began straining and we noticed she had a prolapsed vent & we had her euthanized. This is what we found during the necropsy, a lash egg the size of a softball and weighing nearly 1.5#! I’m not sure if the vet could have surgically removed it, but she likely would have suffered a similar fate later on. We will always remember the joy she brought us and are thankful for the short amount of time we had with her. RIP, Lady Bree
