My barred rock girl named Diva has been fairly aloof for the last year after a change in pecking order fight. This week she’s been very sluggish and my oldest found mites on her. We checked the other chickens and found some on one other and have been treating with permethrin powder. I cleaned the entire coop and run and used permethrin spray and DE everywhere. We did this and replaced bedding twice now. I also started treating her for gapeworm using the Fenbendazole equine paste. One pea sized dollop on bread - In Diva’s case, in her mouth. Is this gasping just from mites or is it really likely she’s experiencing both?? 😫

Dosage of SafeGuard or fenbendazole eguine paste or goat wormer is 0.23 ml per pound of weight given for 5 consecutive days for gapeworm. For a 5 pound chicken, that would be close to 1.5 ml orally.

Well… I’m a dork and didn’t check for myself - this girl has water belly and severe mites. All the signs add up. I think we will have to say goodbye tonight. 😔
