Those male saddle feathers don’t lie. And you can tell your friend that both hens and roosters can have spurs (and not have them).

I feel just his whole presence shouts rooster, and I don't own chickens. But from what I've seen at my sister's house, he sure doesn't look like one of her hens...

He's a cockerel, and it takes about a year for spurs to grow much, so he wouldn't have any to speak of.
