I have 3 welsummers, now 6 weeks old, and this one is much bigger than the other two. The comb is not that red, but could it be a rooster?

Look at the size of the legs! Sorry I did not get a tail shot.

    It is a pretty bird.

    Thanks for your help!

I would say it's a boy... there is more black in the feathers and the gold on the back of the head doesn't go all the way around the front. The chest feathers appear to be reddish. I've only grown out Welsummers one time so far, so I could be wrong.

What did it look like when it was smaller? Head spot / eye stripe - was it fainter or more scattered than the other 2?

I agree but I'm not an expert either. The hackle feathers look a little pointier than my welsummer pullets and although the comb is not red, it is a little pink and mine have tiny, tiny combs that have not a hint of pink in them and they are 16 weeks old! The legs are also quite large on your welsummer. All that points to roo but I would wait a while longer to be sure. [IMG]

Here's a comparison. These are about 6 weeks. Boy on top.

I do hope it's a girl! That's a big comb on your rooster, Ascorbic, so that gives me hope. [IMG]

I can't find a photo of when it was smaller, 4boysmom. At that point, I could not tell the difference between the Speckled Sussex, Dark Cornish, and Welsummers. They all had chipmunk patterns and these are my first chickens, so I didn't know what to look for.

The only bird I KNOW is a rooster, is one of my easter eggers. It started crowing a week ago!
Thanks for everyone's input. I am loving raising chickens![IMG]

Cockerels should have black chest feathering. I would say that's a pullet.
