Sexing a Single-Combed Silver-Laced Wyandotte?

I'm starting to think that my run of bad luck with these chicks is getting even worse and my much-hoped-for single-combed SLW is male. I know that Wyandottes are notoriously for the girls coloring up early BUT, I have no idea how large a comb a single-combed SLW would have.

The chick in question is just over 5 weeks old and thoroughly disinclined to pose for good photos.

I'm pretty sure that the one with the normal comb is female. Yes, her comb is purple-red, but the SLW girl I have and two of the SLW crosses looked just like that when they were little.

Silver-Laced Australorp(ish) birds.

I love the silver-laced pattern and I love Australorps (which also seem perfectly suited to my climate and my management).

I wanted to have 2-3 good SLW hens and was actively hoping for non-SOP single-combs to save having to breed out the rose comb.

That's a hard one. My Wyandottes all seemed to redden up and comb/waddle wise looked like cockerels compared to my other breeds at the same age. Both are now happy laying hens, but I was a little nervous when they were the same age as yours.

Victoria turned out to be definitely female and I *think* she's laying, but I can't tell for sure because she sleeps up in the rafters where I can't get hold of her to do a butt check.
