Welcome to BYC. I've never done it. I've always ordered from hatcheries. Someone that has might come along and let you know...I'd like to know as well!

[IMG] and [IMG] from Ohio. So glad you joined. I'm like Dawg53, I order my layers from hatcheries so I know I will get pullets. The only ones I can sex with good results, are the BR (Barred Rocks) by their spot and feathering. [IMG]

Quote:Chicken sexing is actually an art form that takes years to master. The hatcheries hire highly-trained chicken sexers and their accuracy, after YEARS of training and practice is still only 90% at best. It's not really something to be attempted as a hobbyist as you can injure or kill a baby chick very easily.

I'm waiting for someone to invent an at-home test that accurately and cheaply determines the sex of chicks!

There IS a DNA test that you can do for about $25.00 per chick. You can send a sample of the egg shell the chick hatched from, a blood sample or a feather to AvianBiotech's lab and they will then tell you the sex by extracting the DNA from it. Pretty amazing stuff!

Here's the link to that company:
