Sexing by sound?

So I have raised a few batches of chicks, and ended up with a bunch of roosters. One thing I've noticed is that when they come out of chirping stage (when they cluck) I have been able to determine gender through the sounds they make. Silly, I know, but it has always worked. Hens usually make longer clucks, that starts high pitched and lowers in volume as the cluck continues. Boys scream and honk. Usually deep sounding. Their honks are usually similar to a duck.

Is it possible that sound could indicate whether the chick is male or female?

Don't know, wish you had done sound videos to document.

But several of my girls had low pitched honks as their voices changed…sounded like gooses.

Sorry but no there is not. Not until the males start crowing.

I've never noticed a difference in clucking noise between the rooster chicks and the hen chicks.

I would file this along with all the other old wives' tales on sexing chicks - it has a 50/50 shot of being right.
