Sexing chicks by Spur Bump?

Discussion in 'What Breed Or Gender is This?' started by SundownWaterfowl, Oct 1, 2008.

  1. I was reading that you can sex chicks at around 3 days old. The males will have a spur bump, and the females wont. Is this true, or an old wives tail?

I do wish us old wives didn't get the blame for stuff we had nothing to do with.... [IMG] I don't know about with chicks, but I do know that hens get spurs and so have the bumps so I don't think I'd depend on that too much. [IMG]

All chicks have a spur bump. Males will grow bigger and females typically don't (altho there are exceptions).

  4. Okay. So all chicks will have the spur bump. I got worried when I felt my chicks legs. lol.
  5. I have a few hens with spurs - don't worry.
