Yesterday there was a broadcast on our National TV about a new kind of egg they sell In the supermarket with the label ‘no chick killing’ .

The team investigators of this program went to the laboratory that use this method to trace male chicks at ⅔ of their lifespan in the egg. Then cull them to prevent male chicks being born.

The investigators also go to a hatchery that sells one day old desd male chicks to Zoo’s and animal shops. And to a farm where they explain how another brand of eggs keep all chicks (leghorn type) alive until 15 weeks before they are sexed. Only then the male chicks are being culled for meat.

The broadcast is in Dutch but without understanding the language it is not too complicated to grasp what its all about.

At the end of the broadcast there is no conclusion but there is confusion about what is best.

Thank you for sharing. Unfortunately I do not understand Duch but, among other things, I would not have known how to comment...
It's clear that, anyway, man keeps on playing with the lives of whom do not have the right to self-determination nor the freedom to choose. It's extremely sad, in my opinion.

You do have a point. Men/farmers are playing with the lives of chickens by breeding efficient laying ‘machines’ and meat ‘factories’. That is why they cull most of the male sexed chicks after hatching. Its not economic to let them live if you cant sell the meat for 3x the normal price for chickens. Most of the cost for chicken meat is feed bc most of the work is done with computer systems and robots nowadays 🤖

I think with my explanation you can ‘understand’ the documentary. Lots of interesting images.

😡 Extremely sad.
What is it you find sad?
  1. Factory farming. With specialised hybrid breeds for laying eggs and others for meat?
  2. Killing male one day old chicks?
  3. The ability to sex chick embryo’s?
  4. That the male chicks of the leghorn look alike breed are kept even though they it’s not very economic to keep them?

Maybe I should make a poll of this. Can I do that myself?

It is sad the large segment of the population do not know where their food comes from.
It is sad that Americans grow up never eating real food.
Please post your rooster rescue, I know there is a farm animal rescue in upstate New York. How long do rooster live anyway?
