We have 18 Rhode Island Reds and we are having trouble sexing them. Any tips to sex our chickens? They're about 5 weeks old. Also, when should our hens start laying eggs and how frequently will they lay?
Hi there When sexing watch for large, red combs and wattles, thick legs, pointy saddle feathers and slow feather growth in the males. (Females=opposite.) Around 8-15 weeks roosters will start crowing. Hens will start laying around 4-6 months and RIR hens will lay about every day. Make sure by 18 weeks the birds are eating a 16-18% protein layer feed.
