So here's the story, about 3 months ago at the grocery store I came across a very weak looking tangerine dove, it had a band on its leg so it must have been hatched in captivity and then escaped, I caught it easily as it didn't even have the energy to run away.i took it home fed it, and gave it some water, poor thing was dying of hunger and thirst. Anyways fast forward until now, it's alive and well but without a name. It coos quite often even though it's alone, everyday actually, so I thought it was a male but it doesn't have that black ring around its neck like some male ringnecks have so I'm confused as to whether it's a male or female. Does anyone know ? I would like to give it a fitting name

That's awesome you rescued it, what a lucky dove!

There are many different mutations of ringneck doves, some have a black neck ring, some have a gray neck ring and the white doves have a very pale almost unnoticeable neck ring. The sex is not determined by weather or not it has a black ring neck.[IMG]

My female dove would coo like a male until I got her a mate so the cooing isn't always accurate either.

The easiest way for me is to feel their pelvic bones on either side of the vent, in females they will be about a fingers width apart and in males they are almost touching.

It would be great if you could post a picture of the dove tho [IMG]

It's not letting me upload a picture on the mobile app right now , but it does have that light silver almost lilac ring around its neck, I thought that the rings were only black

My tangerine ringneck dove also has a silver neck ring so must be a tangerine thing.

This is mine, is this what yours looks like?
