Hello!

We bought eggs to put under our broody, and 3 little chicks came out. 1 black and 1 chocolate cochin bantams, and 1 columbian wyandotte bantam.

I know its early, they are 4 weeks and 2 days (real easter chicks), and there is no rush, but I'm of course super curious hihi. I will post more pictures later.

Chick #1 Black cochin bantam
( the first to hatch, so almost 1 day older than the wyandotte)

Chick #2 chocolate cochin bantam
(second born chick, I thought this would also be a black cochin, but after @Overo Mare suggested chocolate I checked with the breeder and she has confirmed it is chocolate!)

Chick #3 columbian wyandotte bantam
(the last one to hatch, and the most gentle and shy)

So I'm the most curious about gender, but also any thoughts on overall development are of course welcome. It's my first time hatching eggs, and it's also the first time for the hen.

The mama is as far as I can tell doing a really great job raising them, and she calls out the I found food all come here the moment we enter so thats a bonus. They are not afraid, but very active and curious hihi

It's much too early for the Wyandotte and a bit too early for the Cochins. That being said, both Cochins look like pullets.

Post updated pics at 6-8 weeks.

Cute chicks! Is is early but I don’t see and boys yet. Glad mamas doing well with them 😊
I know it's early but I thought it's a good sign that they all seem yellow still, and no significant waddles or obvious roo behaviour. I have no idea what to look for in tail feathers and wings and legs and all that stuff that I see people writing about, so I thought maybe there are some other clues to the more trained eye. Just trying to learn along the way. I will anyway let them grow till crowing, but the chicks are all going to be for the neighbour so she's of course really curious as well. And she's a bit afraid of getting too attached yet if there is a rooster cause they are her first chickens hihi. I just treat them all like pets anyway
:love

Will the wyandotte develop later than the cochins? I was thinking as the wyandotte has the least of comb development (even if the comb I guess is anyway smaller) and is more timid that it probably was a pullet. But what I understand from you is that I will know it the latest with that one? Good to know!

I also have a question about colours, because the two black cochins are quite different. One looks brown, and the other black, and there is quite a lot of lighter colours as well. Does that already give away that they will have different black colours and can you already tell whether there will be some white on them, or might they still get black entirely?

Yep, you've got it. Wyandottes mature slower. Or trickier maybe is a better way to say it. The pullets can and do redden early sometimes.

The black will lose the white, but the one looks chocolate and possibly mottled.

@The Moonshiner, thoughts?

That's exciting, I don't really mind i just expected them to be all black as the parents are supposed to be black. Can they carry other colours? Or are the parents then different not the black ones? Maybe I need to ask the breeder
