Hi I am new to keeping quail and I am hoping someone can answer some questions for me........ I have had 1 male and 3 females together for 1 week and the day we put them together the male mounted the females a few times. But since that day I haven't seen him mount them and I haven't heard him calling. How many times a day would I expect him to mount them? Do the seasons play a factor in this? They are this year's birds, I have seen the foamy secretion when I have picked him up, at what age do the males stop mating? (they are japanese quail) I am a little worried that my stud may not be doing his job!

    Thanks for any advice

Hello there and welcome to BYC! [IMG]

Usually Japanese quail are pretty sexually active and should be mating many times during the day. How old are these birds? How are you keeping them? Where are you keeping them? How big is the area they are in? What other details can you give here?

You might give him an overall exam too to make sure he is not ill in any way.

Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided to join our flock. I'm a chicken person and don't know much about quail (never had any), but they sure are cute little birds. Definitely post in our Quail section and take advantage of our quail experts there. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Good luck with your quail.
