I will never use a heat lamp again, unless I have more than 25 to brood at a time. Heating pad all the way for this old biddy now! It makes an incredible difference in the rate of feathering, and in their behavior. They are so much more friendly and inquisitive when brooded with heating pad. My littles were flying around in their coop like parakeets at 2 weeks old. They were in and out of their loft, putting themselves to bed and integrated with the chicks who were 3.5 weeks older by the time they were 3 weeks old. Only using the heating pad intermittently at 3 weeks old, choosing to sleep beside it at night, and this was in May, outdoors, zone 4.
