Sheep: Birth of a Polled Dorset Lamb It all began in the warm straw of one of our lambing pens at O dark 30 this morning. A little over two hours after Mom passed her mucus plug out pokes a white lamb hoof! Another contraction and he pokes out a little bit more. The lamb's position is correct with the presentation of the mouth and nose with both hooves. You can see that the bag is still covering the lamb's face, but all is well. Another contraction and a little bit more of him comes out. See his little tongue hanging out? And the ewe waits to let things stretch a bit. A good push and out comes the head. And now the rest of the lamb with a slippery slide to the hay below. A perfect birth. Mom comes right over and begins to clean off the sack surrounding her newborn lamb. A good Mom. And a happy lamb! Here's Mom and twins 18 hours later.
