what kind of water / feed source do i need to put in the box for my adult quail to have a safe journey

nothing. Just make sure to feed and water them before you put them in the box.

so if i give them full free range of feed a day or so before they will be fine?

I've never shipped birds, but I did recieve some adult call ducks several years ago and they had lettuce and fruit in the box with them for food and moisture.

i have heard watermelon will give them food and water for their trip

I wouldn't give watermelon, as it is a diuretic, which relieves the body of excess urine/moisture...... I just found out cucumbers are too, so I won't be using them anymore.

I would try to find some other fruit that is juicy.

Oh. Well I had recieved 5 geese from a friend in Kansas, and she just fed them and watered them right before the trip.
