i have a trio of black jap bantams and when i try to hatch eggs they either don't develop or die after about 15 days. and now i have heard about a short leg gene that may be causing it can anyone tell me what this may be and what it does?

It's called the creeper gene and is what gives the Japanese their short legs. If you breed two birds carrying it 25% of the young die during the incubation process. If they hatch they don't carry it. If they're just not developing they may just not be fertile.

is there any physical telltale signs that the adults have it or am i over thinking it and the way to tell is the shortness of their legs

They don't hatch when they carry it in double dose (gotten it from both parents)

Short legs are the tell tale sign.

That's pretty long legs for a Japanese. 1/2" shanks are considered long by some.
