    Hi Everyone,

Contemplating whether I should start breeding chickens. All information would be amazing but I have a few main questions

    1: Would I make a profit?

Are people looking for chickens and their eggs or would I be stuck with tens of eggs and chickens unable to be sold

2: How much space do you need?

Is there a certain amount of outside space they need. I live in the suburbs I don't have acres of land to keep them.

3: Are roosters really that loud?

Will I be woken up at 4 am along with my neighbours or not

4: Would having a cat be a massive problem?

Surely there are chicken breeders out there with cats, are there ways to avoid it or is it a constant struggle.

5: Do I have to be there 24/7?

I go to school and get back home around 3:30-4:30, would this be a major issue.

As I said any other extra information would be awesome.

P.S. Please nobody say in the comments "Oh my gosh he doesn't know anything about chickens or breeding them why is he thinking about this." It is just a thought but a thought with potential.

I don't know anyone who makes a profit with chickens, not if they raise them right and feed them properly.

G’Day from down under MaybeChickOwner [IMG] Welcome!

"Oh my gosh he doesn't know anything about chickens or breeding them why is he thinking about this." did not even cross my mind; what did was I wish I could answer all his questions. Sadly, I cannot as I have a small flock of 5 pet bantams.

I am even scratching my head a little trying to find the best Forum on which you could post your ‘Would I make a profit’ question.

I will have a go at a couple of the others though:

How much space do you need? Large Fowl [LF] require at least 10 square foot of run space per chicken and 4 square foot of coop space. Bantams, a little less than that.

Yes, roosters can be loud .. Hens can be noisy also.

Yep, lots of chicken people have cats and on the whole, they learn to live with each other. However, around chicks, cats are definitely a threat.

No, you do not have to be there 24/7. If your chickens are safe and secure from predators and have food, water and ample room they would be fine while you are at school.

Good luck! I wish you all the best in your endeavour should it come to fruition.

Oh, just thought, you might want to check out the Learning Centre, lots of good tips there: https://www.backyardchickens.com/atype/1/Learning_Center

Edited to Add: I had another thought, you might also find this thread of interest, it was one of the Topics of the Week: https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/...enses-and-saving-making-money-keeping-poultry

I wouldn't mix breeds coz they could be a nuisance, because they probably won't lay many eggs! Plus, I personally wouldn't buy mixed breeds (only if it would be killed) (i love all hens and cockerels!) [IMG]

Not sure why mix breeds are considered a nuisance [IMG] Many chickens are deliberately cross bred to be great layers - I do it.
