im buying 2 birds from a poultry processing place to save them from slaughter. Do u think they would have been vaccinated, and if not not should i do it myself and what should i vaccinate them for? If they have been vaccinated would it hurt to give them another vaccination of mareks and other ones just to be safe? What wormers do u recommend and what vitamin supplements should i use? is it better to use suppelments in water or the type u use in food form?
thanx

Do you have any other chickens? If so, I would think twice and thrice about saving these birds. I know this sounds harsh, but they "may" carry many diseases or strains that your birds are not immune to. If you are just getting them, then ok. I wouldnt give adult birds vaccinations. You can give them an electrolyte and vitamin supplement that has probiotics in it. There are many brands that you can buy at a farm store. Just make sure you mix it right and dont give them too much. Gatorade is good for electrolytes and then give a tiny bit of active yogurt for the probiotic part.

I like Ivermectin for a wormer, but is not classified as a chicken wormer.

I think it would be best to let these two birds go to their maker. You "could" introduce problems into your coop that "may" last for years, with much heartache . Unless you are specifically set up for isolating chickens and hospitalising chickens and vet bills. You just never know what disease they "might" have.

If these birds are to be taken from a processing plant they will have been exposed to just about everything a chicken can be exposed to. If they are going to a processing plant they are for sure past their productive age in terms of laying eggs. If they are destined for a processing plant the odds are that they are meant to be meat birds and may be a challenge to keep healthy. I dont think you asked for advice as to whether or not saving them is a good idea but I cant think of one good reason to "rescue" these birds.

You may save two but jepordize every bird you will keep in the future. I cant think of a worse plan

im not gonna put them in the coop for about a month and instead keep them quarantined so i see if they have any heath issues. also they aren't broilers they are young sex links (not sure why the place is raising those for meat) silkies, and pigeons

I spoke to interhatch about vaccinations as unsure what to do when/if my chicks hatch. They recommended Mareks (this is oral to put in drinking water but must be done when chicks 1 - 4 days old otherwise useless. They also talked to me about Newcastle and Influenza (I think sorry was taking lots of notes but lost them) this is a vaccination and has to be give when chicks 1 - 4 days. We may sell some of our hens when/if they hatch but dont know if you have to vaccinate them or not to do so - does anyone know this?

Thanks

, Usually on BYC you need to post your own post to bring up a seperate topic.

Mareks is an injection at 1 day old, dont know about other vaccines. You need NPIP cert to sell chicks under 4 months, and blood test over 4 months in Wisconsin. Each state is different.

Wish you the best sydney13
