Anybody else in the Los Angeles area?

I live in the Culver City area of Los Angeles (on the west side at the 405 and the 10). About ten minutes from Venice beach.

Last week I left for work at 7am and there was a full grown hen waiting at my door. Considering where I live, it's as though a crocodile fell from the sky.

Her inauguration of my mini farm in the back yard (circa last wednesday) is the first thing that's made this city livable for me - other than my husband being here. [IMG] (Originally from Tennessee...lived in San Francisco for 12 years before being maritally dragged southward).

    Any clucking neighbors?

Howdy and congratulations on being adopted by a chicken. I'm a new member of BYC, living in Los Angeles (Hancock Park), and looking into getting a couple of hens. This site is great for learning and getting a feel for life with chooks.

Oh, can anyone in the LA area buy my little roosters ??? boo hoo.

I love my silkie so much, and want a good home for him, but can't have a 'crower' in my backyard!
I also need to sell two frizzle 5 wk old roosters !!!!

My 4 mos old silkie rooster sits on baby frizzles, as though he is their mama.

    And ...
welcome to BYC, by the way !!! :)

Ooooh, friends! My hen is now celebrating her one-week anniversary at our house - I put pink string lights up around her coop and now she comes right in as soon as they turn on. Bright lights, big yard!

THE PICTURES ARE ADORABLE...I wish I could have the noisy little peepers!

If anybody knows where to find some baby hens, I'm looking for two..

Also found a good vet who specializes in chickens (who knew? He's in Santa Monica, which makes it even stranger.)

I'm in Los Angeles, too. In North East LA, near Eagle Rock.

Is anyone looking to get one or two baby chicks who might want to share an order from My Pet Chicken with me? I want to get two babies, and I'm convinced ordering vaccinated chicks from a hatchery is the right way to go (after a bad experience with feed store chicks). My Pet Chicken is okay with orders as small as 3. Let me know if you're interested. I could order 2 for me and however many you need, and you could just pay me per chick once they arrive.

I am definitely looking for two more chicks to keep mine company...I don't know much about ordering chicks - I need to make sure they're both female, and I don't really have a situation at the moment where I can put a lot of high-intensity time into little ones...plus she's completely free range during the day and I wouldn't want little ones to get snatched or lost in the foliage. That makes me think I'm kinda looking for an early adolescent to keep Asouline company.

My chicken vet said the best place to get chicks in LA is at PCH and Topanga Canyon. Do you know about it?

And what's your bad experience with feed stores, incidentally?

If you read around on here, many people recommend that you never buy adult or adolescent chickens. I was like you: I wanted to have a more grown-up chicken to add to my flock, rather than raise another baby. So I got a 2 month old chick from a feed store in Bellflower. Now, she's got a respiratory infection and I'm going to have to put her down. My previous chickens were also from a feed store in LA. I got them as babies. One is totally fine, but one has Mareks disease. So...

As I have read here and other places, chicks from a reputable hatchery are the "safest" because they come from sanitary conditions and you can get them vaccinated for Mareks. So, that's what I'm doing from now on--to save myself the heartbreak of having to cull any more chickens.

If you order from a hatchery, you can specify that you want pullets, and they sometimes have more breeds. I am planning to get my chicks from Ideal, which is NPIP certified and has a good reputation on this board.

Hm.. I see. Very helpful. My hen showed up on our porch last week and we've just taken her in - she just seems lonely. I already have such a steep learning curve this week alone and I'm a bit intimidated by chicks. Have you raised chicks before?
