I picked up this lovely Barred Rock hen and was just wondering if she is show quality or not. If she is not please tell me what makes her not, I am still learning!

Well first let me ask is the Yellow or White? In the picture they look white..

If so, She would be a DQ.
If you took her to a show as she is and if the legs are Yellow, she would a DQ for the Black feather/s in the tail...
She does lack in type,
Needs improvement in barring,

Chris

She's much better than others, but her type is lacking, her facial coloring looks pale...has she been allowed into the sun? Perhaps she should be...she looks somewhat weak? Her barring is smudged, but again is better than other birds I have seen. Before showing, if you should decide to take her to a show, pluck out the black feathers. I don't condone it, but have seen several other breeders do it before a show. To me, it's along the same lines as clipping a sprig on a comb. Sure, it's gone now, but it'll pop up later in the breeding pool. Plus...if your bird wins, is it REALLY a win knowing your bird had a DQ before you "bettered" it?

She may place well in a local fair, but in an APA show against other standard-bred Barred Plymouth Rocks, she won't stand a chance. I'm sure she is a very sweet girl though!

ok to answer all your questions, Cris09 what you mean my "yellow or white"? Oh, and whats a DQ?

rodriguezpoultry, i dont know if she has been in the sun... I got her at an auction. She hasnt been outside at my place yet because she is still in quarentine so that may explain the paleness. Her legs are also pale, not very yellowish. When you say pluck out black feathers do you mean feathers that have no white on them? She eats and drinks well but I really dont have a clue what conditions she was housed in in her old home.

I think Cris09 meant the legs. Barred Rock hens have yellow legs. Also, a DQ is a disqualification, if I'm right. She looks alot like my little Barred Rock in size and how her body is, but mine lacks type too. She lays great though! Good luck with your new hen.

Oh, sorry the legs.. Are they yellow or white?
DQ = Disqualified
If she has white legs the she will be Disqualified.
Black feathers in the tail is also a Disqualification..

If you are going to show chickens that you should realy get a American Standard of Perfection .....

Chris

I think I am the first person to see this but her bottom beak appears to be longer than her top beak which is a DQ and you will get knocked down for having black feathers and her leg color is a DQ. Her size is extremely small, she needs to be alot bigger, so to answer your question no, she is not SQ
