I have a Rhode Island Red, she is about 9 months old and hasn't started laying yet. Well I moved all 7 of my hens to a permanent coop that is 8x8 with a 20x8 run. However, after a couple days she refused to leave the coop, she sits on the floor all day. At first I thought she was broody as when I went into the coop to clean it she would become aggressive and peck at me if I came in more than a couple feet. I made sure she had food and water inside the coop and she slowly became lethargic. She now will let me get close enough for me to pick her up and move her to a separate in-closure inside.

Now here in the question. When I picked her up I turned her over and she looked like she had poop covering her bum. None of the others have this issue and she in uninjured and very clean other than that. When she is standing on the ground she looks like she hunched her back and droops her tail toward the floor. She also doesn't hunker down like the other chickens. I'm starting to get very worried that she is sick. I have never had one of my chickens do anything like this before.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks.

She could be egg bound :( When that happened to one of my hens she was bleeding quite a bit so you may not be dealing with the same thing but mine had every single one of the same symptoms except that she eventually started bleeding from trying to push too much. Have you noticed yours trying to push at all? Since she should be due to start laying any time I would guess that's what's happening

Unfortunately she isn't having any signs of attempting to lay. I stand watched her for a bit today and while she is actually moving some and holding her tail back up to a normal position occasionally she still seems sick. We have another 3 Rhode Island Reds that are the same age that started laying 3 months ago. What can I do if she does have an egg bound up?

Research Mareks Disease and see if that sounds like her.
