Heads up, I’m including a pretty gross photo of worm infested chicken poop at the end of this.
My chicken, Left Eye is a Plymouth Barred Rock and she had a rough day yesterday. The temperature got to be in the 100’s and although she’s usually has no problem dealing with heat she was suffering really bad, panting so hard it sounded like she was choking and there seemed to be a buildup of saliva in her beak. I brought her inside and sat her in some ice water which seemed to help since she eventually stopped panting and drained the liquid in her beak but she wouldn’t drink water or eat any yogurt which usually she loves as a cold treat. I put her in front of the AC and fan where she just stood for an hour and pooped twice. The poop had small white egg looking things, some looking more like segments of a worm. They were not moving. From what I’ve seen online, they look like tape worm but she’s not exhibiting any other sign of tapeworm. She looks great, she eats the same amount, her poop had been regular and normal up until yesterday and she’s laying quality eggs like 5x a week. She did break into the garden recently and ate a bunch of earthworms so it’s possible. Today there are no worms in her poop and she’s recovered from the heat but I saw her do what looked like vomiting up a small amount of saliva. I’m guessing this is related to the worms. The vet is closed until Monday so my question is: do the home remedies work? Should I start putting garlic in their water? Diatomaceous earth in the food? Does that only work for certain types of worms? Thanks in advance!
