I bought two Rhode Islands from the same feed store I've bought from before. They were both large pullets ready to start producing.
1) After about one month one started to give me about 4 small eggs then she started dropping two larger eggs. I went out to check the nest at her usual laying time and saw her still sitting there she stayed for about an hour. I raised her up to see if see was just sitting on it and there was nothing. checked back inn about 30 minutes and she was sitting on the ground nest to the nest. In the nest was the largest egg I've seen in my life. She hasn't laid again since then but has some sticky feathers around her back side. Did that giant egg injure her? I got her out and tried rinsing her clean with the hose. A month later and still nothing from her. She just lays around a lot.
2) the other bird has never laid but they both go in the coop around 3 in the afternoon and don't come out in the morning until around 10 am. Are they defaults?
I have two other birds (1 Production & 1 Golden Sex Link) that are great birds. They both lay every day and set a good example for the others and are not bullys.
Should I get rid of the two RI's???? I'm not here to have pets. I want egg producers.
Thanks for any advice

I'm sorry but I don't have your answer. You may get more opines if you post the laying issue under egg laying /behavior forum?

Sounds like the bird may be sick. You might post this question in our emergency section....https://www.backyardchickens.com/f/10/emergencies-diseases-injuries-and-cures

If she is not laying and going into the coop with this other bird in the mid afternoon she is no doubt sick. I sure hope you can get her back on her feet and healthy again soon!

I'm glad you joined our community!

Its your decision as to whether to get rid of the two Rhode Island Reds. They don't appear to be producing well, so if egg production is your main concern, then I would try and find new homes for them.
