We have a peachick that is about two weeks old. His eye is glued shut by pus, and he can't open it. He was fine until yesterday and nothing has changed, he still keeps closing it and it pusses until he can't open it. The other chick is fine, nothing abnormal. I was told to go get medicine from the vet, however due to a tight budget I can't right now. Is there anything I can give him that will help this cold he has. We have him under the heat lamp and everything like normal. I have been getting a warm rag and gently rubbing his eye to clean it out. Please help!

Terramycin eye ointment from TSC, its about $15. for a small tube, but its worth it. Until you can get there, soak a cotton ball in warm salt water and hold it on his eye, do this for about 10 minutes at a time, keep dunking the cotton ball in the salt water to keep it dripping. The water should be very warm, but not hot. You probably should get some kind of antibiotic to give his as well. If you are diligent enough about the salt water eye baths, you may not need the eye ointment.

  5. That's the stuff! I would use a saline wash as well first. If this is a secondary infection you need Tylan or other internal antibiotic.

X2. And I read somewhere that Tylan (tylosin) is mixed in saline and dropped in the eye, but I don't know the doses, etc.

weve been putting that in his eye for a few days now but now he seems like his nose is stuffed up and hes got snot bubbles coming out of it every so often what kind do you give a peachick with a cold???

  8. Time for Tylan. At two weeks old I would give about .2cc of Tylan 200 under the skin at the base of the neck. I would actually try and give a little of that right into the sinus but you may not be comfortable with that.
