On sunday (092318) My daughter found our rooster with a foamy mouth and gurgling. I immediately put him in quarantine and then on monday got him on .75cc of penicillin and VetRx. Symptoms have decreased and he is much more alert he also got a bath. Today 09/26 he is still Gurgling but not bad at all and not all the time. My question is does anyone think it could be Gapeworm or just a respiratory issue?

Welcome to BYC. Does he have watery or foamy eyes, any head shaking, or coughing? How does his crop feel? Crop impaction or sour crop problems can sometimes make them sound gurgly if crop contents come back up into the thoat. Gapeworm is fairly rare, and most chickens cannot eat or drink since they are struggling to breathe. Some respiratory diseases are virus and some are mycoplasma (MG) or coryza. Penicillin won’t help any of those. I would get some Tylan 50 injectable plus a few 3 ml syringes with 18 or 20 gauge needles. Give it orally by removing the needle. Dosage is 0.3 ml per pound 2-3 times a day for 5 days. Give him just a few drops at a time so he doesn’t choke. Make sure he drinks plenty of water.

If you want to worm him in case of gapeworms as well, give him 1/4 ml per pound of fenbendazole (SafeGuard, Panacur) for 5 straight days.

So his Crop is empty or nothing that i can feel. No watery eyes or foamy. Was having clear discharge from his nose that has stopped. He does seem to be getting better and is eating and drinking what appears to me normal.

I just had a scare with mine today. I came home at lunch and his comb didn't look right, then he flopped down and started what looked to be a seizure. I grabbed him and immediately rubbed his neck. He became more alert but still had his beak open. I put my finger in his mouth-couldn't feel nothing. Gave him some nutri drench and rubbed his neck some more. The color started coming back within minutes. I brought him to work and he ate an egg and became pretty alert. I think he had something stuck in his throat. I will be checking him throughout the night. I checked him at bed time and there was no labored breathing, neck area felt fine. I'm sure I won't be sleeping much tonite.

Maybe yours ate something that was to big?

So he was doing great the other day walking around the hospital and eating and drinking now today his eyes are closed and his head is hanging. He does perk up when I check on him. I think he’s gone. Gonna give him a few hours then take him to chicken heaven.
