Hi there,
I had this strange problem with some of my whitebreasted turkeys. It’s a mystery to me and was wondering if anyone had had the same problem with their turkeys.
I had 5 white broad breasted turkeys..this is the first time I had turkeys. I had them together with chickens. They slowly started having trouble standing. One started to lay down a lot and I knew it was time to have them slaughtered. Before I could get them slaughtered one of the turkeys got severely pecked. When we brought 2 of the turkeys to be slaughtered by our cousin(he has a farm and knows how to process Chickens, etc.) he told us that the turkey with the wound was so bad that infection had spread through the whole turkey and that it’s intestines had black stuff in it and it smelt horrible. The other turkey had some funny looking coloring in the meat at its wing tip(he thought it had gotten pecked)
Fast forward a week or so and the same problem popped up again with another turkey getting pecked and we decided to slaughter the remaining ones, even though they seemed to be in healthy condition. They walked fine and weren’t lying down except for the one that got pecked. it happened so fast. One day I noticed it laying down and by the time I checked on it later that night it had gotten severely pecked
We take them to be slaughtered and the wounded turkey had the same infection throughout its body (this turkey smelt worse my cousin said... worse than the first one even though it didn’t look worse)and the other 2 turkeys had parts of their meat off colored.
has anyone come across this same issue? How fast the turkeys went down to the infection spreading throughout their entire body? And the other seemingly healthy turkeys had off colored meat. My cousin said it might be gangrenous bacteria? In the soil? I’m just really curious as to what caused it. Thanks
