Hi friends,

I was out today with the girls and I noticed that one of them was wobbling a little and seemed a bit slow compared to the other two. After grabbing her and inspecting her, I noticed that her wattle is a little limp and not so bright red. Her earlobes and crown are quite swollen and almost grey/blue-greenish in color under beak and face. Her vent also looks a bit unclean compared to the others.

Could anyone advise on possible illness she might have and propose some possible solutions?

It should also be know that these hens are free ranging all day and I have caught them eating broken down plastic and bits of styrofoam. I have tried to clean the little in their area as much as possible, but sometimes they roam into another section where others are living and discarding their garbage at will. :(

How is your girl doing now?

Is she swollen like that on both sides?

The only thing i can think of right off the bat, is that maybe she was stung by something ... or snake bit. I'm hoping that whatever it is will process out over night.

Do you have an update?

It seems that she's doing better, and it looks like the swelling is coming down. Both sides were swollen, and I was thinking maybe she got into some contaminated water.

Hopefully she'll be ok and isn't contagious to the other birds. The other two seem to be doing fine.

Thanks for your thoughts.

The swelling around her head and wattles could well be due to an insect or tick bite. Some infectious diseases such as fowl cholera and coryza can cause this and other symptoms. I would give her one dose of children's benadryl or diphenhydramine, which treats allergic reactions to insect bites. If the swelling goes down, then that might be the problem. Here is some reading about fowl cholera and coryza: http://edis.ifas.ufl.edu/ps044

Im not sure if I'm asking question in right place but I was wondering if anyone new what disease may cause my hen to sound congested and one eye to swell and if so what to treat her with

Welcome to BYC Breezybeans. It sounds like it could be one of the respiratory diseases such as MG or coryza. You will probably want to start your own new thread here https://www.backyardchickens.com/forums/threads/add/forumId/10
for advice, so that more people will see your thread and not be confused with the other posts in this one. In the meantime here is a good link to read about common diseases including the respiratory diseases: http://edis.ifas.ufl.edu/ps044
