Silkie chick just ate a spider! Is it okay to put grit out for them?

We're on day 2 of my broody BO is raising my five new chicks in the coop and all is well. But I just saw the Silkie chick capture and eat a spider that was in the coop. I have a bowl of chick starter out for them (Mama hen is eating that too because I didn't think the babies should have access to layer feed) but if they're eating stuff off the ground should I put grit out for them? I don't have baby grit, just the regular stuff.

Every time I think I have this figured out something new happens...[IMG]

They don't need grit to eat bugs and spiders. Also, the mama hen will encourage them to eat dirt so they will get grit. It's okay to buy chick grit for them, but mama hen will show them what to eat, including small rocks and sand for grit.

Agreed. Mama hen has it covered [IMG] and you've got one less spider !

Thanks so much! So far, the answer to every question is "Don't worry - Mama knows best". Sounds like I'll be fine if I go with that...

It was a VERY big spider for a four-day-old chick! [IMG]
