This (ugly) Silkie was given to me and I've got no clue what it is. Any ideas?

I'm told it is about 3-1/2 months old.

It looks like a pullet, but silkies are really hard to sex. Good luck!

I agree, looks like a pullet. And I don't think it's ugly, I think it's adorable. Just got my first 4 silkies and I love em.

It reminds me of my poorly bred red hatchery silkie, which is a pullet. I've read (here on BYC) that the poorer quality silkies were generally easier to sex (earlier) than well bred ones with tons of fluff, big crests, etc. I think my (poorly bred) red silkie is a cutie pie, although I know she's probably ugly to good silkie breeders.

I'd say roo as it has a swept back hairstyle rather than a mop.

Both of my (once again - poorly bred hatchery chicks [IMG]) red silkies had/have the hairdo that looks swept back, both have very small crests. At almost 18 weeks of age, I think they always will. Now, if that's supposed to be a well bred silkie, I'd jump on it being male. But I wouldn't use that to sex it otherwise, unless you begin to see individual streamers that really stand out from the rest of the "hair."

This one is definitely hatchery bred. I've seen show quality Silkies and they're gorgeous, but the only way this one can stay is if its a pullet (I hope it is). I'll hang on to "Fluffy" for a little longer.

April, Not ugly...it just does not have a beard. Bearded Silkies are more attractive. You must be partial to bearded...most are. I know I am. Regards, Aria

Regardless of whether it is cute or not (I don't think it is), I can only keep it if it is a pullet.
