I have a SilkiexPolish Cockerel(10 month), two hens(9 month) of the same, and 7 chicks(6 weeks). I am learning about the two breeds from the information here on the BYC website. I picked up the birds as they were cheap and cheerful.
If anyone has this X it would be nice to hear about characteristics and behaviour. I am an amateur chicken keeper.
Thus far, the breed seems docile and easy going. At the moment though, with the chicks, everyone is on guard.
The flock free range all day on three acres with two horses. They put them selves to roost when ready and I generally lock them in around that time. They are let out at 7-8 in the morning, depending on my night before! and roam all day.
I have been giving them layer pellets and a fancy pet store mix. They get scraps every now and then.
The cock-a-doodle-do from the Rooster is so so, bit disappointing really but he gets the job done. My neighbour about down the road, over the to the next road and up a bit hears him at 4 am
