I have some Silkie roosters and out of the blue they will just viciously attack my Silkie hens. They will grab them by tufts of their feathers and won't let go. Is this normal?

This is normal only for bad cockerels. Some cockerels are simply nasty tempered fellas who don't have any manners. They can be scared off attacking humans but if they are going after hens they will simply continue doing it as long as they are allowed to. When it comes to cockerels like these, the best thing for flock is to separate them permanently or cull them - there are so many good, sweet roosters looking for homes, roosters who CARE for their hens and would NEVER attack them, that it doesn't make much sense to keep bratty, ungrateful cockerels from the stew pot.
