I was wondering at what age to roosters (specifically silkies) reach maturity/fertile and at what age do they begin to cockadoodledo? I live in an area where I can have hens but not roosters. I've had hens for many years now and have hatched out dozens of chicks but I want to start breeding Silkies. Just wondering if maybe theres a month or so gap where a cockerel is fertile but doesn't crow. Other wise the boys with have to stay at a relatives farm I suppose!

(I don't know if this would be the right place to ask my question but this is the best I found)

    Any help is much appreciated!

Cockerels begin to crow and mate at around 4 to 6 months of age, with bantams and light standards beginning closer to 4 and medium or heavy standards nearer 6. But a cockerel that young will have poor fertility and still be very clumsy when mating, so hatchability of young cockerel eggs is often lower than those of older cockerels and cocks.
