My husband just brought home a skinned bird. It is an area about the size of half your hand. At first he thought it was the vent injured, but it is the oil glands at the side of her tail running up under the fold of her wing. We were away yesterday and the day before until way after dark. Both nights my husband just gathered eggs and shut the door to the coop. They are in a secure run, and I saw Mrs. meanie pulling feathers two days ago. I scolded her and she sulked off, but she must have got on a mean binge yesterday-possibly Friday too. We are going to isolate the hurt chicken until we know the others won't start in out of curiosity, and try to identify the feather puller. I think she will become tagged some how. Bracelet or something...shackles is what I am thinking. They have more space than what was suggested for large bird breeds, and they are on the highest protein feed that we can find. I have had issues with this same hen twice before in their short little lives (6months) and I just really do not want to go to too much more effort for her. She isn't one of the sweeter or friendlier hens. I have about six that look enough like her, that I do not want to off the wrong lady. So I guess it will be watch and see, and have the fish net handy and scoop her up. (koy net not fishing net) We are going to dust her with antibiotic powder, keep her warm and resting...I know that daily egg will really hurt, and hope for the best. I have some antibiotic additive for water...Any other advice?
