I was just visiting family and one of there new birds just got injured. They are at a stand still because it's their favorite sweetest hen (soon to lay).

We examined her and notice sever bruising by the hock. It was green color. She can not put pressure on the leg and just uses her one leg. The bad leg is completely limp. We checked for dislocation, there was a little snap, but her leg still showed no movement. Also her toes showed no movement. I didn't feel anything broken, there was no swelling and the leg look normal (except for it being limp). This bird has been flying around to roost with one leg. What could have caused this? could a roo cause this to happen?? there roo seems to prefer that one hen way more than the others, even tho shes not laying.

Question is would this likely resolve? whats the likely hood if not of a chicken getting by on one leg? she hasn't even began to lay and its their favorite bird.

My suggestions to them were to cull her :( but they don't want to. and only have 4 hens and a roo.

It doesn't sound good that she has no movement in the leg, and it is limp. That sounds like possible nerve damage. I'm not sure it it can get better. I would confine her to a crate or pen with food and water for a couple of weeks. A broken leg will take 2-3 weeks to heal, and a bad sprain even longer, but with limiting activity, it may be less. Make sure she is getting vitamins and trace minerals in her water. Here is a good link to read through about broken bones, splinting, and the chances of success in treating various injuries:

and another about orthopedics: http://www.exoticpetvet.net/avian/orthopedic.html

Could you wrap the leg in some self sticking ace bandage for some support. Sounds like an injury. She may recover given some time. l would confine her for a few days and see how it goes.

Thank you guys, I am going to suggest what was listed above. I am going to suggest the bandage wrap and putting her in a crate in view of her flock. It's not my bird and I don't live near them. But I know its there favorite hen and she is so sweet!! Would the estimate time be around 2-3weeks and if no improvements.. at all be to suggest culling?

Bad sprains and strains can take 4 to 6 weeks to heal, less time if they are mild. So I would imagine this could take up to a month to fully recover from.
