So a day or so after lockdown a gross smell is now coming from the bator.
We have 36 more hours till there should be pipping.
We drastically increased the humidity just before lockdown, but I bet there is at least a couple bad eggs.
Cannot candle as they are FBCMarans eggs.
Just wait it out? Or open and find out?

If it stinks really bad i would go through and smell them because a opened up incubator with a bit of a drop in humidity and temp is better than one that will kill all your chicks because one egg exploded

i myself have never had a problem with opening the incubator

I opened before and sniffed every egg to see who was the culprit. Closed it back, disposed of the egg. Wash hands.
Didnt have a problem

If nothing has pipped yet it is safe to open the bator briefly. Quickly sniff each egg and the stinker will be obvious. You sure don't want newly hatched chicks trampling and busting the rotten egg and spreading the germs around.

You guys rock! So I sniffed out the naughty egg and disposed of.
Yesterday night was 21 days, we have 2 hatched out and 1 pipped! Yeah!
It is getting very hard not taking the loud early kids out and into brooder.
I should really wait right? And leave everyone in bator until tomorrow at least?
What about reaching in to get egg that needs help?

Again, if nothing is pipping it's safe to open the bator briefly. VERY briefly.
If you try to "help" an egg you usually do more harm than help. It sad to see an egg pip then die but I won't jeopardize my hatch over 1 egg.
But that's your choice.

If you dont have any pips you can get the already hatched out and into the brooder but be quick about it. I don't help any eggs after they pip. Just let them do thier thing. If they don't hatch, there is usually a good reason. And remember that 21 days is a baseline. Some can take up to 25 days to hatch and some as little as 17-18 days. Every eggs is different but 21 is the norm.
