snake control

we live out in the country down in southern GA and i really didnt think i would have that much of an issue with this(dont know why im surrounded by woods). But does anyone know of any kind of snake control i can use besides my 12 gauge .45 and shovel. we just went out to the run for snack time and ran into a 2 foot cottonmouth(water moccassin). luckily we got there before he had gotten into the run or coop. but now not only am i worried about my chickens, but my wife and kids too, unfortunatly i tried to not make much noise and went with the .22 first, and missed the sucker by a half inch.... to bad for being 10 feet away and never shooting her before(its my wifes gun). but he ran to far to the woods before i could grab the .45 quick enough, the shovel was by the shed, and i left the shotgun inside. anyways, if anyone knows of anything or any way i can keep the snakes out. id prefer to stay away from chemicals but i will if i have too.

I've heard moth balls but in my experience a good shot gun carried at all times is the best snake repellant. Our pond became infested a few years ago because of cattails,

we cleaned out the snakes and killed out the cattails took almost every weekend for a month but we got them. After a year of no snakes had two this Spring. They have now gone to snake H#$$. Mow, Mow Mow also!

Well, I`m a shovel and .22 man myself, but I have read that some folks have had good luck with an electric fence wire strung low. I`ve had rat snakes galore, but my land is fairly high, so no poisonous snakes, yet. Taurus makes a 5 round revolver called "The Judge". It shoots .410 and .45 Colt rounds. Could be a good excuse to buy a new gun, heh, heh. Good luck........Pop

hahaha ive been trying to get the judge for about a year, the wife wont let me, but i think ill be picking up some .45 snake shot tomorrow for sure.

Take it from an old country girl, just use a hoe or a shovel on a snake if you're not familiar with a gun. There's less of a chance of the snake getting away if you don't have to go back in the house for the gun, load it, etc. Much safer for you and animals and neighbors. I am not knocking guns; I own lots and use them accordingly. Those of you not familiar but are going to use a gun anyway, please remember this; the bullet(s) don't stop at your property line. A hoe is my favorite snake killing tool....

I have used Liquid Snake Repellent and am again this year. So far, so good. I have actually watched a snake come up to the sprayed area, turn and go the other way. So it does work to some degree for some snakes. The actual testing results were pretty impressive. I no longer have the link to that particular results site.

I went with this product instead of mothballs as there is no naphthalene (cancer causing product) as there is in moth balls which is its primary active ingredient as I recall.

Last year there was a thread about using rolled up wire/netting that the snakes would get all tangeled up in. Do a search!

the netting I put up for the blueberries catches snakes pretty good depending on what kina snake it is the water snakes and green snakes and black snakes are turned loose​
