Went out to check on my chickens the other day, and one of my three year old hens was being attacked by two other hens. Upon closer look, her pupils looked like snake eyes and she's suddenly blind as a bat. I'm not sure what's wrong with her. Could she have eaten some fungus or bitten by a poisonous spider???? Please help! She is having trouble finding her food and water. I have separated her from the other chickens and am giving her antibiotics, but it doesn't seem to be working. Any ideas on how to help her????

Welcome to BYC. Can you post a picture? Were your chickens vaccinated for Mareks disease? Mareks can cause a variety of symptoms, but it can affect the eyes causing blindness. There can be pupil changes that might be what you are seeing. Mareks can cause pinpoint pupils, dilated or irregular-shaped pupils, or color changes because of tumors on the optic nerves. Eye or ocular Mareks is only one type of the disease. Blindness can also be a result of infections, vitamin A deficiency, and avian encephalomyelitis (AE) early in age. I would separate her for her protection, with food and water.

Here are two pictures of my hen. Her feathers are doing funny on her neck. Do the feathers actually fall out when they have Mareks Disease? I separated her from the flock the morning I noticed something wrong. My other chickens aren't displaying any illness. Do I need to worry about them also? Thank you for your help.
